RELIX: SPRACHEN DIE JAM?
MARS MUSHROOMS: NUREMBURG, GERMANY
One of just a few German bands to tread the jamband/improvisational road, Mars Mushrooms is a sextet that does it surprisingly well on its live CD, Throw Down. In fact, the band offers a remarkably refreshing sound that intersperses present-day jamband influences (Phish, Widespread Panic and Galactic) with an artful mix of psychedelia, blues and subtle world-beat nuances. A spokesperson for the group says its goal is to bring the American and German scenes together.
Mars Mushrooms plays with confidence; they also sing in English and while the vocals are pretty good, the lyrical content is your typical, whimsical jamband fare. The band’s improvisational skills are best highlighted in the jazzy “Goin’ By” and the percolating funk of “Funka La Vista, Baby.” The band shows its lighter side with the infectious “Rubberball” and the more classic rock-sounding ballad “Fire Angel,” which features an impressive guitar solo. www.marsmushrooms.com (RELIX, Mick Skidmore, 05.
